Over the past few years, we have seen a huge jump in the number of victims of internet scams. We are finding, most often, that the suspects are running these scams out of Nigeria or Ghana. Lately, we have uncovered scams originating in India, Mexico, and different areas of Europe, which appear similar to those originating from Nigeria and Ghana.
Internet dating sites have completely changed the game for these scammers. You may recall having, at some time, received emails asking for financial assistance for which you would receive a large sum of money, in return. (ie: “Barrister so and so is stuck in some country and needs your help, or the Duke of such and such needs your help in moving money.”) Although they were able to victimize many with this tactic, so many others immediately realized it sounded too good to be true, or that it was just plain fishy. The game changer was when they realized victims would be willing to look past the red flags, if they were to play into their emotions, rather than their generosity and/or wish for a large sum of money. We are starting to find that the vast majority of these victims fit a specific profile of middle-aged to elderly women, who have been recently divorced or widowed.
We do feel that there are more victims of these scams now that they are going the online dating scam route, as opposed to the previous tactics. But, we feel that more and more victims are coming out, due to the growing media exposure, including various episodes of the Dr. Phil Show. This exposure is now educating the public and the victims are starting to notice the red flags and really start to think about who they have been chatting with, on the internet.
Unfortunately, these predators often take the steps to remain hidden and attempt to remain untraceable. At Brad Alan Investigations, we are diligent in tracing the “untraceable”. If you feel you are the victim of any of, but not limited to, the above listed, contact us today.
If you have sent money to anyone online and you feel that you are a victim of this type of scam, we strongly recommend that you file a complaint with the Internet Crimes Complaint Center (IC3), for the Federal Bureau of Investigations, by clicking on the following link:
